FIRST FLOOR THEATER STAGES STORIES OF INDIVIDUALS FACING MOMENTS OF RADICAL CHANGE.
BY COMBINING VISCERAL ACTING, IMMERSIVE DESIGN, AND COLLABORATIVE DRAMATURGY, FFT EXPANDS THESE STORIES TO ASK URGENT SOCIAL QUESTIONS.
First Floor Theater was founded in 2012 by eight University of Chicago alumni, with the goal of engaging the audience’s intellectual curiosity. Shortly after our inaugural season, FFT was named “Best New Theater Company” in The Chicago Reader’s Best of 2013 Reader’s Pick edition.
After that initial creative impulse, the company redefined and expanded our mission to include the principles above. We brought new members into the company and expanded our staff bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas. As we continued to develop our identity, we moved to focus on intensely collaborative production processes that bring challenging, daring works to Chicago stages.
First Floor Theater is currently in the midst of our sixth season. By the time our upcoming production of Lucas Baisch's Refrigerator opens in May 2018, we will have produced sixteen mainstage productions, including six world premieres and seven Chicago premieres. We have been honored to remount two of our productions - The Awake and peerless - at Theater on the Lake, and we spent our summers prior developing four short play festivals of original new work. As of Season Six, our new work development efforts have become housed in our new Ground Floor program. Still in the early stages of codification, Ground Floor will include a new scripts lab to develop nascent work and a devising wing to develop new voices in non-traditional ways.
First Floor Theater is a resident company at The Den Theatre in Wicker Park.
